Why do children come for acupuncture?
Most children are brought to us because they have a medically defined condition. They may be receiving treatment from their doctor, or may wish to reduce their reliance on medication. They may have a condition which orthodox medicine is unable to cure or can only partially help. Others are brought simply because their parents believe they are not thriving as much as they should be. Whatever your child's individual situation, we have found that children respond well to acupuncture. In acute conditions, the results can be instantaneous. Chronic conditions that would have otherwise stayed with a child for much of its life can be substantially improved or cured.
History of Paediatric Acupuncture
The treatment of children has formed a specialised subject in Chinese medicine since the Song dynasty, which was over 1000 years ago. Chinese doctors recognised the differences between children and adults in diagnosis and treatment, and skillfully adapted their methods to the treatment of children.
Acupuncture for children today
The children that we see today have very different lifestyles to those of the Song dynasty. They have different stresses and strains on their systems and even many of the diseases they suffer from would not have been heard of 1000 years ago. So, even though paediatric acupuncture is rooted in this long tradition, it has been adapted to meet the needs of children in the 21st century.
Is acupuncture the right treatment for my child?
If you are not sure whether acupuncture is the treatment of choice for your child and their particular condition, please give us a call. If we don't think we can help, we will always try to suggest someone else who can, e.g. a cranial osteopath, homoeopath, western doctor.
